１２月になって師走の寒さが身に染みる今日この頃ですが、手賀沼遊歩道近くの荒れ地に菜の花が咲いていました。菜の花の開花時期は、２月〜５月ころなのでしょうが、今咲いています。
山茶花（さざんか）の咲く頃に菜の花を見ると、エッ、と驚きます。
かって、受験勉強の時に覚えた、イギリスのロマン派詩人シェリー(Percy Bysshe Shelley）の言葉
「If winter comes, can spring be far behind?」（冬来たりなば、春遠からじ）
を思い出しました。
この言葉は、シェリーの詩集「西風の賦（Ode to the west wind）」の5節の最後にある言葉です。
5節の原文を以下に記します。

Make me thy lyre, even as the forest is:
What if my leaves are falling like its own!
The tumult of thy mighty harmonies
Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone,
Sweet though in sadness. Be thou, Spirit fierce,
My spirit! Be thou me, impetuous one!
Drive my dead thoughts over the universe
Like withered leaves to quicken a new birth!
And, by the incantation of this verse,
Scatter, as from an unextinguished hearth
Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind!
Be through my lips to unawakened earth
The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind,
If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
また、このシェリーの詩から夏目漱石の「草枕」のシェリーの一節も思い出しました。
「たちまちシェレーの雲雀（ひばり）の詩を思い出して、
口のうちで覚えたところだけ暗誦(あんしょう)して見たが、
覚えているところは二三句しかなかった。
その二三句のなかにこんなのがある。
「前をみては、後えを見ては、物欲しと、あこがるるかなわれ。腹からの、笑といえど、苦しみの、そこにあるべし。うつくしき、極みの歌に、悲しさの、極みの想、籠るとぞ知れ」 (漱石「草枕」)
